A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
